Book Review:

A thousand splendid sons by Khaled Hosseini, this heart-wrenching story is set in the Afghanistan region and we follow the lives of two women Maryam and Leila

Maryam is what you would call an illegitimate child her mother nana worked as a maid in the huge mansion of Jaleel khan a very popular and famous businessman in all of herat until nana became pregnant with Jalil khan's baby

She is then sent off to this small village called guldaman near hirat and a kolba is built here for her and this is where Maryam is born Jaleel khan visits Maryam every week and little Maryam is very very fond of her father Jalil khan

One day when Jaleel khan doesn't turn up as promised Maryam goes into Herath on her own and this incident changes her life forever, she also ends up being married off when she is just 15 to Rasheed a 45-year-old cobbler from Kabul and life with the ill-tempered Rasheed is a difficult struggle in itself for Maryam

On the other hand, after a few years of Maryam’s marriage, Leila is born to another family in Kabul in the de mazan district Laila comes from a very educated and broad-minded family and everything is happy for Leila until bad fate hits her right in the face very unexpectedly when she is about 14

How do the two women meet how do their lives get intertwined and how do they develop a bond so cherished that is for you to read and find out

The book is divided into four parts in the first part we follow Maryam’s life and her perspective in the second part we follow the life of Leila in the third part

We follow both the points of view in alternating chapters and in the last part which is the fourth part we don't follow anybody's point of view, in particular, it's like a third-person narrative and it's actually like a long detailed epilogue if you ask me

However, that being said there is more to the story than the lives of these two women it's so much more than that the story is set in the backdrop of the Afghan political system as it repeatedly collapses and is being replaced and we see how this affects the lives of citizens especially women

We see how the citizens lived with quite an amount of freedom access to education and even some equality among the genders when Afghanistan was an ally to the USSR and the president had the support of the soviet union

How the citizens were surrounded with shooting and killing when the mujahideen took over and there were constant clashes between the factions, how their lives became even more restricted and full of terror when the Taliban took over especially for the women

The book gives a very clear and precise glimpse of everything the afghani people have had to go through and it will pain your heart it will also make you realize how privileged we all actually are to be living in a country that is safe and has security to be living peaceful lives with freedom

I think a lot of people don't realize how privileged it is to have even these things in life this was my first time reading Khalid Hosseini and I must say I was not expecting such a powerful moving story

The writing is also really nice it's smooth makes the story interesting and it's also very easy to understand so beginners pick this up without any hesitation and the story is quite fast but properly paced and it has been executed at all points very very well

This book will make you cry shed tears at the unfairness to the women especially and everything that women had to go through in those days

I gave the book 5 out of 5 stars it is an unforgettable story and a must-read for everyone, so that is it everyone that was my review of a thousand splendid sons by Khalid Hosseini
