Book Review:
Malibu rising by taylor jenkins reid I think this is the fourth book I've read by taylor jenkins read and I'm just she baffles me she truly does
There is seriously no author that I have personally read quite like taylor jenkins read I just feel like her voice her style of writing is
So unique to her like you just know when you're reading one of her books even though all of her stories are
So different you just you feel it you feel like you're just slipped back into the tjr world she just she manages to write super super interesting stories super interesting characters such good freaking dialogue like that's a whole nother story
But she does a great job at that alone but she manages to at the same time in every freaking book just throw in these extra elements that are really interesting and also just really painful for your brain because I feel like she just immerses you in this story
So deeply and just puts you in these really tough situations where you're like I don't even know what I would do if this was me and it's so interesting to read like I don't know I think it's I mean I'm I'm a fan of all types of books truly
But when a book just has a little extra depth to it where it's just leaving you thinking for days after you've read it and when an author can do that with multiple books they're good in my book they're gonna be an automatic buy and that's
Just how I am with her at this point I'm gonna read every book that taylor jenkins read writes and that's just how I feel that was a little tangent but yeah um let's just talk about malibu rising so this story like many of taylor jenkins reads books is actually not set in present day
It is set in the 80s I didn't know that going in but once I realized it I was like absolutely because not only is it set in the 80s
It is also set in malibu california the vibes right away immaculate but essentially this story follows the four children of this very famous rock star named mick riva if that name sounds familiar to you you probably have already read the seven husbands of evelyn hugo
It is not necessary that you have read the seven husbands of evelyn hugo by taylor dickens read before reading malibu rising but I will say having read that before I read this it is very cool mick riva is featured in that story not extensively but you do
Get to see him you do get to meet him you do kind of understand his level of fame and who he really was so it is cool to then meet his children and hear more about him it's just a good flow to the story I just recommend it but you don't have to do
What you want but basically the story does follow mick grieva's four children they are adults in this story I say children but they are in their like early to mid 20s
There are two boys and two girls and the story mainly focuses on the oldest daughter in the story the oldest overall child named nina riva the story
Essentially it's really interesting it takes place over one day but also many years pretty much nina riva like I said is the oldest sibling and they all are kind of famous in their own right they are just famous simply for being mcriva's children
But they all have kind of done their own thing professionally um the older brother's name is jay and he is a professional surfer his younger sister kit also surfs um the other brother he is like a surfing photographer nina surfs as well
But she is mainly famous for being a model she's like a surfing model so they're all kind of surfers they all have gotten into that growing up in california and they've all sort of like gotten famous in one way or another from surfing
But nina is the biggest star of them all because she is a really famous model like her calendar was on everybody's walls growing up that's what she's known for but pretty much nina is especially known for in this community in malibu throwing
This epic party every single year the nina riva party is like the place to be at if you know where it is if you know what time it is you're invited that's kind of the vibe everybody goes and so this story takes place on the day of nina riva's party this particular year in 1983
Nina has just gone through something pretty pretty bad she basically was married to this very famous athlete and he left her for another very famous athlete so that has literally just happened and it's all over the news that she has been left
She is separated from her very famous husband and everyone's telling her not to throw the party but she's like no the show must go on I throw the party every year she's a people pleaser she's not gonna let it not happen so we're basically starting at the very early morning of this day
We're kind of progressing throughout the day seeing what's going on in nina's life but also seeing everything going on in all the other siblings lives they all have like a lot of moving parts of things happening to them personally and it's a bunch of different stories at once
But you kind of see them throughout the day and as you get into the party like their stories weave together and while that is happening we're also sort of like every other chapter really learning these children's story from the very beginning we go all the way back in time seeing
When mick riva met their mother essentially you see them meet you see their love story them fall in love you see mick rise to fame so if you have read daisy jones in the six which is my personal favorite book by taylor jenkins read seriously
I still think about it all the time if you like the vibe of that story seeing how like daisy became famous the other members of the band this story I feel like really gave a lot of those vibes because you do see mick on his journey to fame and seeing like
How that kind of changes him in a way and what he has to go through and what they have to go through as a family during that and ultimately you do see mick kind of be not a very good father and kind of leave his children behind very selfishly and also just because he's a busy man
He's a celebrity but it gives you the backstory and the understanding that mick's relationship with his kids is not the best and they've really kind of had to grow up on their own in a lot of ways so you're seeing that happen you're seeing all these stories present day and it's so freaking good
I don't I still don't know I don't know how taylor jenkins read organized this freaking book but all of these things are happening at once you're flipping back and forth between different stories you're seeing different things happening with all the siblings and then basically it all ultimately leads up to the party and everything just comes together
It was just so good like I don't even know how to explain this book I feel I feel like I just rambled a lot but
It's like this book is not like anything I feel like I've ever read it's really not a romance not every book has to be a romance but this book was
So much about just like family and the importance of that and the importance of like the relationships within your family and putting your family before other people in your life and how family can be real freaking complicated
It's a really complicated thing and it's about relationships between parents and children and just sibling dynamics and a lot of things and just love and I freaking loved
It was all of that with a big old sprinkling of summer vibes it kind of felt like it was all over the place but at the same time it felt so put together and like it just made
So much sense especially in the end just watching it all come together also like a thing I didn't mention it is about family and all of that but there is a lot about life if you guys follow me you know I'm all about life and the meaning of life
How you're supposed to live life and what's really important and you know fighting for your dreams and taking time to focus on yourself and you know caring for those around you
Letting that hold you back and not always putting yourself last and allowing yourself happiness and also just realizing what it really is that makes you happy because I think a lot of the times we get a little lost in the sauce and you think this might be what you want but then you actually get it
You're like this kind of sucks that's not what I want at all or you think that you've been like investing so much time into this one certain thing that that's what you have to do and that's what you have to be and just I don't know following like expectations of people around you or maybe your parents like there's just
So much to life and also so much to what's happening to these characters in this book I felt like in a lot of ways I sort of related I mean I'm not the child of some famous parents or anything like that but I felt like nina was a super relatable character I feel like
I always find myself really relating to taylor jenkins reads main characters like there's always something about them where I'm like I just get you like I really really do and um nina I felt like I really connected with in a lot of ways she was
So interesting and I just loved I loved watching nina's story everybody's story was very interesting but nina's in particular the character arc she had the development that every character in this story had like by the end I was just like it's funny because like I said it really just takes place over one day
But so much happens that it's just so satisfying to see how it all wraps up in the end and I'm very very excited because if you follow taylor jenkins read then you know her newest book coming out is called carrie soto is back and carrie soto actually makes her first appearance in malibu rising
We do get to meet her and I thought that she was quite interesting um honestly she was it seemed a little crazy to me but I could tell that she's a character that's very misunderstood so after reading
This book I'm like I am dying to read carrie soto's entire book and again it's probably going to be set in the 80s which we love just so good in conclusion I didn't want to give any spoilers because I really want you guys to go and read this book
I think it's really great for summer you know a lot of people right now are doing summer reading recommendations which I'm going to have a video on that soon so don't you worry but a lot of summer reading books I feel like are really kind of the same
Like rom-com going to the beach going on vacation which I love I am not slandering it but I'm just saying this is a book that still gives you those summer vibes like you could totally bring it on vacation or bring it to the beach
It's just it just works but it's not it's not all fluffy and happy-go-lucky like there's some real kind of deep stuff to this book so if you want to switch up your summer reading a little bit I totally recommend reading malibu rising
