Book Review:

Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match by Sally Thorne this book follows the story of a lady named Ruthie and at first she is perfectly happy with her life spent working at the Providence Retirement Villa where in her spare time she watches reruns of her favorite old television shows and cares for endangered turtles.

However, when a new Temp named Mel starts at the villa and they agree that it s time for Ruthie to vamp up her non-resistant love life. Now, enter Teddy, son of the Providence s owner and resident bad boy.

Ruthie was initially looking for a calm relationship, but now with Teddy in the mix, things might change. SO first we ll talk about the setting. This book takes place almost exclusively on the campus of the Providence retirement villa.

I absolutely adored this aspect of the book and would give the setting a 5 out of 5! This villa was honestly so sweet and great. We have individual little townhouses that the old people live in and then we have one duplex that Ruthie has always lived in and now that Teddy has gotten a job on the grounds, he lives in the other Half of that duplex.

On top of that, another aspect of the setting is that it has the highest population of these critically endangered tortoises of anywhere in the world. So overall, the setting is super super important to the story and is honestly a character unto itself. Now for the characters.

So in this book we have obviously the two main love interest characters and then three additional really important supporting characters. So for the female love interest, we have Ruthie.

This leads her to being SUPER regimented in her routine and she also follows a very elderly schedule, meaning she goes to be really early and gets up super early.

However, throughout the book something really interesting happens that we learn about her mental health and what makes her the way that she is, so she was VERY well developed.

Then for the male love interest we have Teddy. Now Teddy has never really stuck to anything and he s the baby of the family, so everyone just expects him to screw up. But, his father decides that Teddy is gonna live at the Providence and he is going to take a job there.

NOW, Teddy is NOT very nice at first, he s very rough around the edges and is basically a player by all meanings of the word.

However, of course, through the force proximity of living on opposite ends of the same duplex and through the fact that this was a contemporary romance, of course Teddy s walls start to get broken down. Also, similar to Ruthie, we get a lot of background on Teddy and learn a lot about his mental health.

I really enjoyed the deeper character exploration that we got into Teddy and Ruthie because we do not typically get that in romance. Ok so now for the supporting characters.

The first is Mel, who is the temp at the Providence. She really just bounces from job to job and hasn t found her true calling. However, she takes Ruthie under her wing and tries to help her find a guy to date.

Another good character aspect about Mel though, is similar to that of the other characters. Mel isn t just there to support Ruthie and Teddy s story. Mel has a story for herself.

So Mel has this crisis that she wants to find her calling in life, she doesn t just want to bounce from job to job, she wants a true profession, so, Ruthie takes Mel under her wing and tries to help her find her dream job.

Then the other two supporting characters were Renata and Aggie, who were just two wacky old women who were constantly present in the story and who had HUGE personalities. Ok next for plot. Overall I thought the plot was really well thought out and really well developed.

I will admit that the whole classic third act drama happened really late in the book and only lasted like 2 pages, so that felt a little rushed, but other than that I really enjoyed it.

I feel like sometimes in books, especially romance books, random things happen for no reason, whether it be for filler or for entertainment, or whatever. That wasn t the case for this book.

I felt like every single storyline contributed to the ending of the book and helped build up to what happened. Alright that was quick. Moving on to writing.

Now, this is where the book kind of fell a little flat for me. There were a lot of grammar mistakes that kind of made the book a little bit jarring. So one thing that bugged me was parentheses with periods.

Periods alway go on the outside of the parentheses, but throughout the book there were TONS of parentheses used and every single time the period was on the inside of the parentheses, which was bothersome.

Beyond that though, there were quite a few instances where the singular subject but plural verb were used, or vice versa, which really was jarring because when you hear a sentence like she run home or they runs home it just kind of threw me off.

Ok moving on. For the entertainment I thought this book did a pretty good job of it. Whenever I was actually reading the book I was entertained, I just didn t always actually want to pick it up, so it took me a little bit longer than usual to read.

Then finally, as for execution, overall, I thought the execution was really good. Thorne did exactly what she wanted to do. She told the story of a young girl who was a recluse at a retirement home who falls for a bad boy. She did that really well.

So yeah this book was really successful. Ok now that my little evaluation of the book is done, let s move on to my likes and dislikes. First let s talk about some likes. I really appreciated how the story came full circle. Every detail that we got throughout the story contributed to the story overall.

So everything that happened mattered, which I like because I really hate it when authors say a bunch of random things or mention a bunch of random things that don t mean anything in the end. Additionally, I absolutely loved the ending of Renata and Aggie s story.

I thought it was perfect. I also really loved how supportive Mel was of Ruthie. I mean, she JUST met Ruthie and she was willing to jump in front of a bus for this girl. That s the kind of female friendship we NEED. Then finally, something that was addressed in this book that isn t typically addressed in books is religion issues.

I won t talk too much about this but religious trauma and religious manipulation is discusses and I loved that so much because it s not something that you get in mainstream books often. Alright, now we have to talk about some dislikes.

So at first Teddy was a real jerk, and I personally would ve had a hard time falling for this man that was just awful, but maybe that s just me holding grudges. Maybe I need to give people second chances, IDK.

Furthermore, I did think that sometimes Renata, who was one of the old ladies, had gone a little too far in her pranks and in her bossing people around, but perhaps that s just not my sense of humor.

Then my final complaint is something that REALLY bothered me, like the other two I can get past whatever, but this one really didn t jive with me.

Throughout the story we know that Teddy went to therapy, it was just something that was out there. But also throughout the story, Ruthie incessantly asked Teddy why he went to therapy, and kept nagging him and basically demanding he tell her why he goes to therapy, as if it was some quirky character trait that Teddy has.

And I just thought that was a really personal thing that Teddy shouldn t have been forced to tell something to private and important and perhaps traumatic. Ok so overall, clearly I really enjoyed this book.

I do super recommend this book a ton. Additionally, the video after this one will be a book battle where I compare second first impressions to the hating game, which is Sally Thorne's other uber-popular book, so if you want to hear more about this book definitely be sure to check that one out.
