Book Review

The Yoga Sutras are a philosophical and mystical treatise written by Indian yoga master, sage and philosopher, Patanjali. The text, also known as the Bhagavad Gita, is one of the most influential books in the spiritual, cultural and social history of India.

The text is composed of a set of aphorisms or maxims that outline the ideals of yoga, or union with God. Numerous interpretations of the text have been written and presented over the centuries, but only a few have been translated into English.

Among these translations is one by renowned yoga instructor and author, Shankar Iyengar. Iyengar's 'The Yoga Sutras: A New Translation' is an in-depth re-translation of Patanjali's text into contemporary English.

The Yoga Sutras are a systematic presentation of the techniques and concepts outlined in the Vedas. It is a compendium of Iyengar's personal interpretation of the techniques and concepts outlined in the Vedas.

The Yoga Sutras present Iyengar's personal interpretation of the techniques and concepts outlined in the Vedas. The text consists of a series of aphorisms that describe how one can attain inner peace through various mental, physical and spiritual practices. It outlines steps to attain deeper levels of consciousness and unites human beings with their true divine nature.

The Yoga Sutras were written over 2,500 years ago yet they're still extremely relevant today. They explain how to unlock one's potential through various yogic techniques that are both physical and mental in nature.

One technique discussed in the text is pratyahara - withdrawal or dissociation from sensory inputs - which entails controlling the vikrins (subtle body constituents) through attentive awareness.

With focused attention, one can bring his mind to a state of sensory neutrality; this allows for deep relaxation to take place within his mind, body and consciousness. Once one has achieved this level of relaxation, he can then begin incorporating more advanced yogic practices into his daily life.

Iyengar's newly translated version of Patanjali's text has become highly influential worldwide. It has been translated into many different languages and is currently available in 16 different editions available in print and online. Many famous yogis have noted their fondness for this translation by comparing it to other translations they've read.

They include BKS Iyengar, Pattabhi Jo Jo Anusandhanamandana Jioso Sorythongseuoggaventagbo II (the princely earl who became BKS Iyengars father) as well as Katharine Luhrs (a student of BKS Iyengar's who became his wife). Both Luhrs' expressed their admiration for this translation via letters to BKS Iyengar himself.

The Yoga Sutras are an amazing philosophical and mystical treatise written over 2,500 years ago yet they're still extremely relevant today. This is due to its author- a renowned yogi sage and philosopher named Patanjali- as well as its subject- yoga- which is said to bring together body, mind, spirit and awareness into one seamless whole.

Despite their age, these ideals are still prevalent in today's society- particularly within the growing field of alternative health care treatments such as yoga or Pilates exercise systems.
