Book Review:
After driving 15 hours straight from Tennessee to Texas after visiting family this summer, I can honestly say I don't know how the Pioneers did it in the 1840s over six months, and half of them died along the way. I'm your host, Mike Hernandez, and let's get started.
Today, we're going to take a look at an incredible but intense and at times horrifying book about the 1840s Pioneers. Today, we're going to take a look at "The Indifferent Stars Above" by Daniel James Brown.
In this book, Daniel Brown details the specific account of Sarah Graves Fosdick, a young lady who was newly wed and left with her family on the Oregon Trail towards the Oregon California split. Her family became part of the greater Donner Party Group, which became doomed and famous due to being trapped in the Sierras in the middle of winter.
Looking at the aesthetics, it's a very busy title. You have the crest of the Sierra mountains, an upward blue expanse of sky, and a quote serving as the title, which is actually from a piece of poetry that Brown references later in the book. The title, "The Indifferent Stars Above," is ominous, fitting the subject matter.
Regarding readability, Daniel Brown speaks in a pattern similar to another author, John Bostnecker. He concentrates a lot of information and throws it your way, making it feel like you're drinking from a fire hose, especially before a certain embarkment. While it can be taxing on the mind, the cream-colored pages and clear fonts make it easy on the eyes. It receives a relatively strong score of 7 out of 10.
Now, let's delve into the contents. Daniel Brown focuses on the life of Sarah Graves, who, after marrying a young violinist, embarks on the Oregon Trail guided by Lansford Hastings' book. Hastings, a sleazy salesman, misled pioneers with a dangerous cutoff through the Sierra mountains, leading to the tragedy of the Donner Party.
The book details the general harshness of the trail, the challenges of sustaining a large company, and the specific troubles faced by the Donner Party, including the Salt Flats and the Sierra mountains. The Snowshoe party, driven to desperation, resorted to cannibalism in a harrowing struggle for survival.
The content is insightful, horrifying, and captures the loss of humanity in desperate situations. It receives a perfect score of 10 out of 10. The book is recommended for adults, not children, and can be found on Amazon.
In conclusion, "The Indifferent Stars Above" by Daniel James Brown is a powerful exploration of the human condition in the face of unimaginable challenges. Thanks for watching, and go read something.
