I completely reject the existence of an all-pervading, omnipotent, omniscient God. I am not an atheist because I am arrogant or proud or vain; I am neither a god nor a prophet; No, neither am I God myself.
I am going to sacrifice my life for a cause. What could be more consoling than that! A Hindu who believes in one God can expect to be reborn as a king; A Muslim or Christian may dream of luxuries, which he hopes to enjoy in heaven as a reward for his sufferings and sacrifices.
What hope should I entertain? I know this will be the end when the rope is tightened around my neck and the rafters are removed from under my feet. Without any selfish motive to get any reward here or in the hereafter, I have dedicated my life to the cause of freedom.
Our ancestors developed a belief in some sort of supreme being, therefore, one who undertakes to challenge the validity of that belief or denies the existence of God would be called an infidel or a hypocrite.
Even if his arguments are so strong that it is impossible to refute them, if his spirit is so strong that he cannot succumb to the threats of misfortune that can come upon him from the wrath of the Almighty, he will be called arrogant.
I did not become an atheist because of pride. My disbelief in God has made all the circumstances very harsh and this situation may get worse. Being a little mystic can give a poetic twist to the situation.
But I don't need any opium to meet my end. I am a realistic man. I want to overcome this tendency inside me with the help of logic. I am not always successful in such endeavours.
But it is the duty of man to try and make efforts. Success depends on coincidence and circumstances. It is necessary for everyone who stands for progress to criticize every tenet of old beliefs. Item by item he aims to challenge the efficacy of the Old Faith. He has to analyze and understand all the details.
If after rigorous reasoning, one is led to believe in any principle of philosophy, then his faith is appreciated. His reasoning can be wrong and even misleading. But there is a chance that he will be corrected because Reason is the guiding principle of his life.
But faith, I must say, blind faith is destructive. It deprives man of his power of understanding and makes him reactionary. Anyone claiming to be a realist has to challenge the truth of old beliefs.
If faith cannot withstand the onslaught of reason, it collapses. English rule here is not because God wanted it but because we lack the will and courage to oppose it.
It is not that they are subduing us with the consent of God, but because of the force of cannons and bullets, police and militia, and above all our indifference...
A friend of mine asked me to pray. When told of my atheism, he said, "When your last days come, you will begin to believe." I said, "No, dear sir. That will never happen. I consider it an act of degradation and dementia. For such petty selfish purposes, I will never pray."
