Zen Parenting by Cathy Cassani Adams. If you're looking for a parenting book that will give you quick tips or hacks, then this book is not for you.
But if you're open to the idea that your role as a parent is not to mold your child into an adult that you desire, but to support them in their journey to become their own true selves, then this book is for you.
I'm a regular listener of the podcast zen parenting radio which is hosted by Cathy and her husband Todd. That's how i discovered this book.
The foundational philosophy of this book is that the best predictor of a child's well-being is a parent's self-understanding. because of that, a huge portion of this book is designed to help you better understand yourself.
Cathy combines western research and eastern wisdom in this book to bring you a holistic approach to parenting. she is a therapist, a social work teacher and a parent of three kids. as well, she has a very good knowledge of yoga, meditation and spirituality.
So she definitely has a well-rounded perspective into the complexities and nuances of the challenge that is parenting. and yet, there is so much humility in her writing.
Instead of offering the reader one right way to do things, which some experts tend to do, she guides the reader with helpful advice but at the same time, encourages the reader to find what works best for them, by tapping into their own self-awareness and into the uniqueness of their child.
Because every child is unique, every parent is unique, and every parent-child dynamic is unique, she does not throw a one-size-fits-all solution at you.
The language of this book is easy to understand with no heavy sounding words or jargon. there are lots of beautiful quotes in this book and lots of heartwarming personal stories.
If you decide to read it, my only recommendation would be to take your time and do not rush to finish it. after each section or perhaps after each chapter, reflect on what you learned and which things you could apply, before moving on to the next chapter.
This book has been much more than a parenting book for me. it has helped me to learn so much more about myself. It has broadened my perspectives in a lot of areas, not just parenting.
