Book Review:

I hope Ted Fox has more books in the works, because I thoroughly enjoyed reading Schooled. I'm left wanting to go straight into another of his stories, but there aren't any more ...yet.

For now, I guess I'll have to go online to find his joke book, which I'm sure will be good, since one of the things I enjoyed most about Schooled was the humor. After only one book, I'm a Ted Fox fan, eagerly awaiting more from this gifted author.

Ted Fox is the author of the jokebook You Know Who’s Awesome? (Not You.) and once solved the New York Times crossword puzzle forty-six days in a row (not a joke). He lives in Indiana with his wife, their two kids, and two German short-haired pointers who are frankly baffled there aren’t more dogs in his books.

The recipient of a prestigious “No. 1 Dad” keychain, Fox was widely recognized as having the best swaddling technique of anyone in the family when his kids were babies. And not just the immediate family―grandparents, aunts, uncles, everybody. Anyway, Schooled is his first novel.

Ted Fox is a well-known author who writes about cannabis and its effects. He was born in New York City and attended Columbia University where he received his B.A. in English Literature.

After graduating college, he moved to California and began working at a medical marijuana dispensary. He later went back to school and earned his M.S. in Clinical Psychology from San Francisco State University.

His first book, “Cannabis Grower’s Guidebook”, was published in 2013. In 2014, he released his second book titled “The Cannabis Grow Bible”.

In 2016, Ted Fox wrote a book called “Schooled By Ted Fox”. This book focuses on how to become a successful cannabis farmer. It covers topics such as:

What are the key takeaways from schooled?

Schooled is a work of tremendous heart and humor, one that perfectly captures the absurdities of modern adulthood and parenting in a world where it seems everyone but us has it figured out.

The truth this novel illuminates is that we’re all just doing our best and, like for Jack, our failures are opportunities to grow. And if we can laugh uproariously while getting, um, schooled? Well, those are the kinds of lessons it’s a joy to sign up for.

"This course should be part of the academic curriculum, client on-boarding and employee orientation...I often found myself in situations where I know what is wrong and right but never had right kind of tools or methodology to approach the situation.

This course has unlocked those skills and enabled me to take systematic approach in dealing with ethical challenges at the workplace."- Coursera Course Review

What does ted fox recommend for data scientists?

In contrast to hedgehogs, foxes rely on a plentitude of inputs to help guide them. Intuitively, this seems like the more beneficial of the two relating to data science after having established that a narrow focus on technical aspects can bring about various issues.

Nevertheless, only being a fox in data science does not necessarily have to be better than only being a hedgehog. While strictly focusing on your point of view can be harmful to getting support for your project, trying to incorporate everybody else’s opinions into your project can doom the project’s success just as much.

Assuring everyone around you that you will adapt your project according to their needs might simplify securing funding for the project, however, it might contort your project to the point where it is an entirely different project.

In my opinion, the issue of having to pitch a project to someone not familiar with data science at all is no best solved by almost completely giving up on your input and instead purely relying on the opinions of people that do not have as deep of an understanding of the matter at hand as you do.

In that case, I think being able to stand your ground when it comes to the core concept of the project is of great importance.

All in all, it seems to me that having the ability of a hedgehog to maintain focus on your final goal is crucial in order to get your data science project done. At the same time, not getting caught up in your personal perceptions and way of thinking but instead trying to understand where other stakeholders are coming from and how to best approach them is equally important to me.

I am not sure whether this conclusion fits the framework proposed by Berlin, however, Berlin himself is reported to have never wanted people to take this classification too seriously. Nonetheless, the hedgehog and fox framework can provide a stimulus for an important discussion.
