Book Review:

The Boyfriend Candidate by Ashley Winstead I finished this last week, and I just haven't stopped thinking about it, I just feel like I need to take a moment and talk about why you should read this. So if you don't know, Ashley Winstead is an author who doesn't only write romance; she also has written quite a few thrillers. I've only read one of them, and it's called "In My Dreams I Hold a Knife," and I liked it.

It was like four stars, kept me entertained, felt a little bit overhyped, but I don't really read a ton of thrillers, so you know I don't have a ton to compare it to. But I do read a lot of romance, and this is her second romance book. The first one is "Fool Me Once," and this one came out last year in 2022, and it made my top favorite books of the year.

So to say that I had high hopes for "The Boyfriend Candidate" is an understatement. I gave this one five stars; it had so many things that I like. It's a political romance; it follows Lee, and it's a second chance romance about Lee and Ben, and it had so much going for it.

In terms of both of these books, they are connected because the first one, "Fool Me Once," is about Lee, and then "The Boyfriend Candidate" is about Alexis, and Alexis is Lee's little sister. Alexis does make an appearance in "Fool Me Once"; she is going through some relationship problems, and so she moves in with Lee temporarily, but she's definitely like a side, a minor character in this book.

In general broad terms, basically, I think you will like Ashley Winstead romances if you like messy main characters. Lee in "Fool Me Once" is a super hot mess; she has some major daddy issues. She is yikes; she's going through it; she's figuring out who she is. She really messed up with Ben back in college, and you find out about why and why she hurt Ben so badly.

One thing I like about "Fool Me Once" is the ability to develop the characters in a way that they're very flawed, but they own up to their mistakes, and you're rooting for them. And I think that Ashley Winstead does that really well; she definitely writes main characters that can be hard to like, but it's worth it in the end.

I did finish "The Boyfriend Candidate," and then I immediately read "Fool Me Once" again because I just wanted to be back in their world. Now that I've gone over what the main premise of "Fool Me Once" is, both of these books are political romances. So in "Fool Me Once," Lee is in PR, and she's working on getting a bill passed.

She works for a woman-owned company similar to Tesla, and she's trying to get a green bill passed that would benefit this company she works for. And how it's politically motivated is they basically have to lobby for some votes. Ben, who the love interest is in "Fool Me Once," works for the governor and is basically the head of the governor's day-to-day stuff. So the governor would be benefited by this bill passing, so they're working together.

"The Boyfriend Candidate" is about Alexis, who's Lee's sister, like I mentioned. And Alexis is a school librarian, so she doesn't have a political job. Where the politics comes into this is she is trying, in the opening chapter (so this is not a spoiler), her goal is to have a one-night stand.

She goes to a hotel and meets a stranger, and his name is Logan. One thing leads to another, and as things start to heat up between them, they need to vacate the building that they're in, and they get photographed in a compromising position by paparazzi. She doesn't know who he is, and he doesn't know who she is because she used a fake name.

So, these pictures hit the internet, she finds out that it's Logan Arthur, who is running for office against the governor specifically, who's mentioned in this one. So basically, Logan has kind of a history of being a playboy, so they think it'll help his image if him and Alexis fake date.

This has fake dating, it has politics, and Alexis really has some stuff at stake too because she's a librarian, and her school might lose some funding. So she really wants to help him run for office and ensure that the schools don't have budget cuts.

Both of these really are slow burn. I really like that she does that, and I'm talking like a really slow burn, like nothing happens until the end, really. And I really enjoyed that; we were getting to the end of this, and I was like, okay, there's no way there's page time for them to be together. Well, there was, and it was worth the wait.

And I like how they have miscommunication, but it's for the right reasons, and they eventually learn how to, you know, talk it out. And when they do talk it out, it's worth the weight too. Lots of tension and angst and pining; the pining in this one is especially well done. And there's a lot of page time with them together.

One of my favorite scenes from the book is on a weekend getaway where things don't go according to plan, but it was just so fun to read, and I liked it a lot. They just are really good together. I also like the person Alexis became. In "Fool Me Once," she's very much kind of getting walked over by a bad relationship that she's in.

And in this one, she really figures out who she is and what she wants, and she goes for it. So a lot of character growth; I really like that in these books, each sister goes to her own kind of growing up and realizing some difficult stuff from what they went through as kids and what their parents put them through.

There's some really cute animal scenes in this book and just really good side characters too. The friend group from "Fool Me Once" is also in "The Boyfriend Candidate," and I just really recommend these two.

I think that reading "Fool Me Once" will help with reading the second one. I immediately went and read this when I finished this because there was some stuff that I had forgotten about plot lines and stuff, but it's really well done romance. Very angsty, tension-filled, really good banter, and Alexis and Lee I think are both just like funny, messy characters that I really enjoyed reading about. And the men in these books, very dreamy.

I really love Alexis's character as an introverted school librarian who they described her as, here we go, as an introverted Virgo. I had to remind myself to not let speculations and anxieties about other people's thoughts and feelings

derail my life, and that's on the end page 15. I read that, and I was like, I'm sold. I love Alexis; it's amazing. Yeah, Logan and Alexis meant to be loved it. I will continue to read anything Ashley Winstead publishes that is romance. I might read some of her Baptist thrillers, but like I think she has a romance recipe that just really appeals to me.

It's made for me, love it, love her. And I mean, even the cover had a glow up like this cover is beautiful. I think this one is like so I hope that they continue to look like this. Okay, those are my thoughts on these books; you should read them if you like romance books, political romance books, messy character books, very good love interest, found family, really funny and cool friend group, good spicy scenes, and really going for good causes.
