Book Review:

A Court Of Silver Flames By Sarah J. Maas i relate to that girl on a spiritual level we are kindred spirits so i decided i'm gonna barrel through that said this will be a spoiler riddled review if you intend to read this at some point and have not yet just click off

right now all right guys so going into a sarah j maas novel we know that we're going to have a white obnoxiously feminist female lead and i'm a feminist myself so i'm allowed to say that i want i want girls to fight too but come on

we're just going to let that slide we're going to have a villain who's probably gonna suck evil we're just gonna want to destroy everything for literally no reason we accept it we're gonna have an endless sea of unnecessary mcguffins

it's just gonna up the page count we agreed to it we bought the book anyway we read the book anyway this book is bad kind of horrendously bad but it's also really good first i'm going to talk about what's bad about it because

i know you're all here for the rant session afterwards i'm going to talk about actually what worked and what i really appreciated and what i wish there was more of it's probably going to be kind of ranty it's probably going to be kind of long because i just finished this book last night

i have a lot of feelings and i have a lot of thoughts so first off the problems number one i'm going to call him koshi koche he popped out of nowhere for no reason so he popped off nowhere for no reason

so he doesn't deserve his name to get pronounced or was he in the original series he wasn't in existence if he wanted to get free of his lake he would have already tried to ally himself with the human queens and with high burning in the initial war and he probably would have gotten free because as

this book says way too many times in case she had tried to join hybrids forces we would have lost then why didn't he can we talk about all of the extra monsters in the prison i don't even remember their names because

they're not important lanthus he was like talked about in one scene and then he was in one scene and he died in that same scene so you're telling me that lanthus was like a really big monster and like really hard to defeat

but i don't i don't agree because nesta killed him in one try and she'd only had a few months of training so he couldn't have been that formidable there's more there's more so much more the world building

in this book is non-existent this over here what is all this it's just nothing there's just nothing there there's this place called the middle what is it where is it located it's not even on the map huh obviously the dread trove is gonna make no sense it was glamour and it was glamorous

so we wouldn't know about it i'm so sure ameren literally remembered she was like oh yeah that's a thing you didn't think that would be worth mentioning obviously not because

they didn't exist let's talk about the whole brigalian situation the human queen who got turned into an old crone fae person what's her motive like i i understand she was thrown into the cauldron and she came out old

so now she wants revenge on the cauldron and on nesta and on the high fey of prithiyin in general specifically the nightcorp it makes sense that she'd want to destroy them however she suddenly seems to want to destroy everyone and everything else in the planet literally no one sets

out with the goal in mind of destroying everyone and everything on the planet no because if you did that you wouldn't have anyone to rule yeah you want to destroy some people but you're also going to benefit some people if you are overthrowing the aristocracy you're going to

benefit the peasantry that's just how it works you're not going to go into it trying to kill everyone because then you're not going to have any following and you'll never actually rise into power in the first place

then briellian's whole plan for getting nesta over the course of the whole book riz and the rest of the night court are basically saying briellian is definitely gonna come after nesta she wants to kill nesta for revenge or whatever her whole plan is so discombobulated and so stupid and so backward put nesta in the blood right the blood right is just the hunger games

sorry that wasn't even her original plan her original plan was even dumber use the crown on some illyrian dudes males have them send emery into the blood right so then nesta would be stupid enough to go in after emery to try to rescue her and then once she was in the blood right

without her powers briellian could come and kill her but then it gets even worse because then whenever nesta was actually already sent into the blood right brilliant still decided to send in emory and gwyn for no reason literally said she sent them in there for an amusing bonus

what's smarter taking away your enemies powers and placing them somewhere where they are without friends or allies or taking away your enemies powers but giving them two friends and allies so they at least have a chance of survival what seems smarter oh yeah option one not giving

them any friends or allies but for an amusing bonus briolian decided to send nessa's two best friends and sisters in arms into the blood right with her but it doesn't stop there no no no it gets it gets worse she also waited the entire week of the blood right until like literally two hours

before dawn on the last day when nestus powers are going to return and her whole plan will be foiled just so cassian could winnow to the other continent to rescue aerys and then briolian could trap

cassian winnow him back to pristian into the blood right so he could kill nesta while under the influence of the crown what i'm sorry i'm sure you're confused i'm confused too i can't follow the logic you know why because there is none and then we spent all this time talking so much about

briellian well she's the one who's gonna like destroy pristine and then nesta just killed her was it nice to see a really big display of nessa's power yes it was i won't lie i liked it but also we shouldn't have spent so much time talking about brielle and if she was just going to die in the first book

but of course we had to have nesta killed briolian with an extreme example of her power because then after nesta gets back from the blood right fabra is having her child a whole other subplot that i'm going to talk about later

so the way that they save pharah in the child's life is for nesta to give up her power so the cauldron will tell her how to save favor and the baby what is sarah j maas obsession with getting rid of her main character's powers first aelin was just subjugated to that horrible fate and now nesta

but it's even worse with nestor because this is only the first book of the next three books so for now for the rest of the time nessa's just gonna have like a small little amount of power for no reason like yeah during the whole book i knew nestor would be the one to somehow save pharah's

life but i figured she'd figure out how to use her power over death and do it that way not just lose it so yeah and now i'm going to talk about the good parts this book deals with trauma and actually a realistic way nesta doesn't just go from being horrible to good in a steady

a steady she gets better and then she'll have a setback but that's kind of self-explanatory but this really shows a different perspective of the whole night court friend group obviously when you're reading

the original trilogy from faber's perspective the night court people are going to be heroes you love them but then in this book when you're reading it from nesta's perspective you can actually see their flaws

you can see how they actually are dealing with nesta in a horrible way it's great because they think they're really dealing with it well but when you see it from nesta's perspective like it's really

it's really clear that they're not and i've seen people complain how they think that the people of the night court suck no you're just seeing it from a different perspective if you were seeing this from faber's perspective you'd think they were doing the right thing too

it's because you're reading this from someone's perspective who doesn't like them it's good writing rizz especially gets really tired of nesta's trauma he kind of blames her for it hates her just it's the same thing in real life they say yeah take your time

they still get annoyed when things get hard basically everything to do with nesta herself was great i personally think this book could have been better if sarah j maas had decided to take it in a more unique direction the problem with extending a trilogy into a series when you initially

only intended for it to be a trilogy is that you've already saved the world right you can't top that you just try to create a second war and like do the same thing over again it's not fun it's not interesting the mortal instruments tried to do this and the next three books just repeats of the original three on the other hand

i think a good example of this miss peregrine's home peculiar children expounded on their universes they world built and they created new problems instead of just harping back on the ones they already solved that's something that sarah demoss had an opportunity to do here the book could have been

a lot better if instead of just creating you know the dread trove new villains who want to destroy the world for no reason she could have made this about the repercussions of the war and fighting that would have resulted after a war like that and yeah it makes sense that brilliant would still be out there

that could have been like sort of more of a subplot instead of having favor's pregnancy be a subplot we could have had that be like one of the main plot lines we could have delved more deeply into the spells

they tried to use to save her life we could have focused on nesta training not only her physical body but also her magical body learning how to control her powers over death so by the time farrah is actually giving birth nesta

can actually use her powers to save the baby save feyre would have had much of a better effect like we could have had the same ending of the book it just would have felt much more believable.
